Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was injured but is “safe”
1 AM IST — 11 Mar 2026, Tehran, Iran
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was injured but is “safe,” according to Iranian officials on Wednesday.
Yousef Pezeshkian, a government adviser and the son of Iran’s president, said on Telegram that contacts told him Khamenei was “safe and sound” after reports that he had been injured.
Iran’s ambassador to Cyprus, Alireza Salarian, told The Guardian that Khamenei was present during a February 28 airstrike on a compound in central Tehran and was injured in the attack.
Iranian authorities say the strike killed several members of the Khamenei family, including his wife and mother.
Khamenei was appointed Supreme Leader on March 8, succeeding his father, Ali Khamenei, who Iranian authorities say was killed in the same strike.
The New York Times, citing Iranian and Israeli officials, reported that Mojtaba Khamenei suffered leg injuries and is staying at a secure location with limited communication.
Iran’s army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have pledged allegiance to him following his appointment.
Iran’s Supreme Leader is selected by the 88-member Assembly of Experts and serves for life.
